Matthias Köhler (GER)

is a director, curator, and, since 2024, part of the artistic leadership team at Schauspiel Erlangen. He studied theater, film, and media studies in Vienna. In 2013 he began working as an assistant director at Schauspiel Köln, where he co-founded the BRITNEY X festival, which quickly established itself in the greater Cologne area as one of the most important platforms for queer*feminist topics and productions. Since then, Matthias has directed at numerous German-language theaters, including Stuttgart, Cologne, Münster, Dresden, and Vienna. He is the founder of the Viennese off-theater group wirgehenschonmalvor, which deals in particular with violence and masculinity and was nominated for the Vienna Nestroy Prize in 2023 with the play BENT.
