THE EMPTY LAND, German by Roland Schimmelpfennig

2019

Spain. A lost stretch of epmty land called the Lapland of the South. After the great rural exodus, there are no more than eight inhabitants per square kilometer.
Alejandra, in her mid-thirties, is coming here for the first time willing to sell her mother’s empty house, who had lived here a long time ago. But the house is not empty at all: old Tomás, the only person still living in the village, opens her the door. Alejandra does not understand what is going on: what does this man do in her house? Who is he?
What at first seems like a somewhat strained but polite conversation turns out to be a battle between two models of life; the distance between village and city, which today seems unbridgeable, becomes a mirror of the distance between generations.
